Natural Hazards Plan DraftDouglas County, including the villages of Lake Nebagamon, Oliver, Poplar, Solon Springs, and Superior, have been meeting over the past year to discuss (and have identified) over a dozen natural hazards that occur within the county. It may not come to no surprise but some of these natural hazards are more and more common, yet recurring serious issues, that affect thousands of residents and visitors across Douglas County every year; with these hazardous events beginning in the Spring and running through Summer. Flooding and wildfires, in particularly, have impacted the county in major ways since the last update of this plan that took place in 2015. In fact we had two large scale floods (7-12-2016 & 6-17-2018) that were to the magnitude that allowed for FEMA related funding to repair flood damaged culverts and washouts. March 2021 was welcomed by the development of a Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee, made up of residents and local officials, committed to addressing this topics. The committee focused on identifying a risk assessment (hazards), capability assessment (tools to implement strategies), mitigation strategies (specific action goals, actions, action plan to reduce risks), and a plan maintenance discussion (how plan will be updated, reviewed, maintained).
We encourage residents of Douglas County to review the Draft Douglas County Mitigation Plan and provide any feedback they may have about the plan. The draft plan and feedback form can be located here https://www.douglascountywi.org/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=752 or on the main news page of the Douglas County Website. |
